Seven Primary Data Types in Citizen Science Determine Data Quality Requirements and Methods

Data quality (DQ) is a major concern in citizen science (CS) programs and often raised as an issue among critics of the CS approach. We examined reviewed kinds data they produce to inform communities strategies DQ control. From our review literature experiences with CS, we identified seven primary types contributions. Citizens can carry instrument packages, invent or modify algorithms, sort classify physical objects, digital collect report observations. found that were not constrained by subject domains, program may use multiple types, requirements evaluation vary according types. These are useful for identifying structural similarities across domains. conclude blanket criticism no longer appropriate. In addition details specific variability individuals, discussions fruitfully focus on methods being used control dictated appropriate type. Programs reduce doubts about their becoming more explicit communicating management practices.
